Self-defense keychains (SDKs) can be roughly classed into the following categories:
1) Sharp Objects
This type of SDK utilizes sharp/pointed edges or a blade. Self-defense keychain blades are foldable, retractable, or have a sheath. This is for both safety and subtlety. Many sharp object SDKs belong to one of two subtypes:
Mini Pocket Knives:
Pocket knives have long been used for self-defense, but full-length knives aren’t right for everyone. Some people don’t feel comfortable carrying a bigger knife, and some people are legally unable to do so.
That’s where mini pocket knives come into play. Usually, only 1-2.5 inches long, the blades on these knives are compact, but often quite powerful.
The sight of a knife, especially one that has been up to that point concealed, can shock an assailant. They can also be used:
- To deliver quick surface-level cuts or scrapes. This can shock an assailant or force them to loosen their grip.
- To stab or jab at an assailant, especially at critical pressure points, to deter or distract them.
Spiked Keychains:
These sharp object SDKs usually have one to four spikes you can use to defend yourself from an assailant. They sometimes have finger holes or grips, which help secure the SDK to the user’s hand.
The spikes vary in length and sharpness and have different uses depending on the SDK. Spiked self-defense keychains are usually made from aluminum or steel. They can also be made of several different materials, including plastics.

The kubotan is a self-defense keychain originally based on the yawara (and similar to tactical pens).
They are usually around the size of a thick marker, no more than 5.5 inches long and around half an inch wide. The standard model has six round grooves for ergonomic grip, as well as a screw eye or swivel. On one end, they have a split ring attachment to clip to a keychain.
There are many different models of kubotan with various designs and features. Kubotans are often made from Lexan, a hard, high-impact plastic. Some kubotans are made from different materials. This includes other plastics, bamboo, wood, aluminum, and various metals.
Kubotans are intuitive as a self-defense tool. Still, they are most effective with basic training. They have many uses, including:

Batons
Batons are cylindrical self-defense weapons.
They are usually made from plastic, steel, or aluminum alloy. Most batons that would fit on a keychain are expandable batons. These are sometimes referred to as “collapsable” or “telescopic” batons.
A standard baton has a single cylindrical shaft. An expandable baton has an outer shaft that contains 1-3 inner shafts. These collapsable shafts lock into each other when expanded.
In a compacted state, expandable batons are often difficult to identify. An unfolding baton can be pretty intimidating, especially if it is a surprise. This is sometimes enough to deter an attacker.
If the sight of the baton is not enough, you can use baton keychains:
- To give hard, full swings downward on the meaty parts of the arms and thighs.

3) Whistles and Alarms
A survival whistle or alarm is a class of SDK that relies on the assailant’s fear of exposure. The sound they make is loud enough to call attention to the fact you’re being attacked. This also lets an assailant know that you do not intend to go quietly.
Whistle keychains have a very basic design. Though there are slight variations by brand, they are otherwise self-explanatory. If blown close enough to an assailant’s eardrums, whistles can also be uncomfortable. Sometimes, they can even be painful. This may distract an assailant for long enough to make your escape.

4) Flashlights

Somewhere between a fist load and a sharp object SDK, The Shar-Key pulls onto your dominant hand. Finger indentations keep it from sliding around and fasten it in place.
It has three distinct striking points (on the front and sides) that can impact an assailant. The tool is especially useful when impacting pressure points.
The right type pressure point hit with a Shar-Key can disable an oncoming attack. This can buy you the time to run away before the assailant can compose themselves.
The Shar-Key does work best if the user has some hand-to-hand combat training. Users should at least have an idea of where to land a punch on an assailant’s body for it to be effective.

Like all other sharp object SDKs, the Toothpick is much more useful if you know where to stab it. Another issue pointed out by reviewers is that to use the toothpick, you have to unscrew it from its sheath. This can take precious time.
One solution that some users have shared is to practice unscrewing the toothpick. This can make the process much quicker and cut down on lost time.

LEGALITY CONCERNS OF SOME SELF-DEFENSE KEYCHAINS
Some self-defense keychains are highly regulated and/or illegal.
The laws and regulations that control them vary depending on the area. There is no one type of self-defense keychain that is outright illegal to own on a federal level (ie, in all states).
For example, the kitty self-defense keychains are illegal in Texas (watch the video below):
However, some self-defense keychains are completely illegal in some states. Some self-defense keychains are only legal with certain restrictions in some states.
Each state has its own policies and laws on weapons. These policies and laws govern every different type of common self-defense keychain.
Some areas have much more stringent laws and regulations than others. Also, some types of self-defense keychains are more likely to legal than others. Whistles and alarms, flashlights, and certain kubatons are less likely to be illegal.
Other types of SDK have more restrictions and are illegal in some states. These include knives and blades, large spiked keychains, and stun guns.
Many laws and policies about self-defense keychains are complex. They are often more complicated than “legal” or “illegal.” Some laws put an age restriction on certain SDKs.
Some laws say that you have to have licensure and/or training to own and use them. Some laws say that people on parole cannot own specific types of SDK.
Further, some laws only restrict SDKs with specific features. For instance, in many states, keychain knives are only allowed to have blades up to a certain length.
