Guitar accessories and tools you might like

As usual, the gear you find on this list is limited to stuff that I have tried and been happy with… unless otherwise noted.

I’m not the most experienced on a lot of guitar stuff. So, as I try new products I’ll list them below if I’m happy with them.

Guitar Accessories and Tools Recommendations

Electric guitar Amps & speakers

  • Portable Guitar headphones amp – This is one of the more brilliant pieces of kit that I’ve found. It allows you to play your electric guitar
    • I was sent this rechargeable headphone amp to review and it works as advertised. The price is right and the effects are pretty decent. It doesn’t like the output of my guitars with hot pickups to be turned up, but when I turn down the volume out on the guitar, this little headphone amp actually sounds OK. Not great, but good enough for practicing. It also comes with a cable so you can plug it into a larger amp if you just want to use it for the built-in effects (chorus, flanger, metal, wah). I LOVE that it connects via Bluetooth to my phone. I use it when I want to practice without waking up the rest of my family. I pull up the instructional video I want to watch on my phone and it plays the audio via Bluetooth through the little headphone amp.
    • Fender makes a little Mustang Micro headphone amp with built-in effects as well. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ve heard good things about it. It costs almost 3x the one listed above.
  • Kustom Tube 12A – My first tube amp, this little practice amp has a tube on the preamp, then a solid-state power amp. It produces a lot richer tones and volume than I got out of the Kramer 10 practice amp that I had for years.

  • Fender Champion 20 – My first upgrade from a basic “practice amp”. The great sound and range of tones available blew me away. Wonderful home practice or small gig amp for beginners.
  • Line 6 Spider IV 75 – I got this in a trade. It is more complex than I need for home practice. But is a legit option for small gigs. The modeling options are nearly endless if you connect it to your PC and run the Line 6 Spider Edit software. I also have the FBV Express MKII foot pedal controller so that I can keep the amp and speaker out of the way and remotely control it from the foot pedals. Super affordable via eBay on the used market or you can go with the newer Line6 Spider V line. It is all solid-state with no tubes at all. But the current state of modeling is such that most people can’t tell the difference anyway.
  • Vox AV60 – I bought this from a member of the band Coda Junction with the Vox VFS5 footswitch bank. I really like a few things about this amp and speaker combo:
    • At 60 watts it can play loud enough for any of my needs in the foreseeable future.
    • It isn’t too big or heavy to throw in the car to take somewhere.
    • The tubes on the preamp and power section provide really rich, organic tones.
    • It is pretty simple to use. I’ll contrast this to the Line 6 Spider which can produce an exponentially wider range of tones, but has a MUCH steeper learning curve.
    • There are 2 channels, each with it’s own range of adjustment.

Guitar Storage

Guitar wall hangers

I hang all of my guitars when not in use as I believe it helps to keep the necks straight.

Guitar stands

  • Guitar stand this sits beside my desk so there is always a guitar within arms reach. This type holds the neck securely so it won’t be easily knocked over.
  • I also use this portable guitar stand to hold guitars for photos, since it lacks the distracting vertical pole to hold the guitar neck.

Guitar Gear

  • Wireless guitar system – 5.8 GHZ – I use this when practicing and can detect no delay. It works great for clean tones, but seems to get static if I put any distortion or overdrive pedals in the signal chain.
  • Guitar cables
  • Guitar tuner
  • Digital Audio Workstation software – for recording via computer
  • Effects pedals
